Thank you to the Founding 2018 Womxn of Color Accountability Council!
Joyell Arvella, J.D. | Founder & CEO of harp + sword | Black, she/her | I bring a diverse professional background in law, education, nonprofits, and business. I have been a racial and gender justice strategist for 10 years, facilitating community dialogues on race, gender, and sexuality.
Kareen Coyoca | Co-founder, DC International Womxn’s Alliance (DIWA) | Brown, Asian, they/them | I have a background in training & facilitation, movement & community work, and analysis of critical systems in relation to justice and liberation. Racism and anti-blackness are global, thus the need to also look at this work and practice that considers the global south and working womxn in the periphery through a lens of third world feminism is crucial.
Lisa M Gray | Associate Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion, University of Maryland Baltimore County | Black African American, she/her | I believe in the need for dismantling white supremacy in all of its forms. For me, this starts with intentional and focused anti-racist and anti-sexist work for white people and people of color of all genders. By developing my allyship and advocacy skills, I have gained over 20 years of experience in multicultural, diversity and social justice education with an intersectional, "race and" lens in and outside of higher education.
Chip Chang | PhD Candidate in American Studies, University of Minnesota | Asian American, she/her | I am a PhD Candidate in American studies and have an MA in Asian American studies. My research looks at Korean American cultural productions, racialized masculinities, and racial formations in Los Angeles. I have teaching experience in formal, classroom settings (lectures and section facilitations) as well as in facilitations on racial and gender equity for USA Ultimate, MN Ultimate, and community-based events.
Melina Martinez | Founder, Entelekee | Multi-Racial Latinx/Chicanx, she/her | I believe in building strong, inclusive communities that are transformative for their members and the world. I have a background in community development, people development, and marketing and I love storytelling and its ability to connect all people to each other.
Katrina Bell McDonald | Professor of Sociology, Johns Hopkins University | African-American/black, she/her | I am a professor of sociology specializing in race, racism and racial privilege as well as gender studies.
Rena Kawabata | Business Consultant | Asian, POC, mixed, she/her | I have been formally working as a facilitator in race and gender equity trainings for over a year. Nevertheless, I have been working to dismantle racism, whiteness and patriarchy for my entire life. I work and interact with white women who want to dismantle these systems of oppression and simultaneously constantly falter in their work. We need this institute because we need more white women willing to do internal work, to hold each other and other white folx accountable to their whiteness, and to protect and empower people and women of color.
