WWARA Youth Development Fellowship

Tuesday, October 1, 2019

White Womxn Anti-Racism Alliance Youth Development Fellowship

The WWARA Fellowship is designed to deepen white womxn’s commitment to fight racism by learning about the ways white womxn specifically uphold white supremacy in the nonprofit sector & facilitate the creation of a collective action plan to combat oppression in your sphere of influence. Between 80-90% of all teachers, social workers, and non profit staff nationwide are white womxn, many of whom are drawn to these professions to help yet end up reinforcing the status quo of racial hierarchy through these roles. Due to the large number of white womxn working with youth of color, focusing on how white womxns’ racism manifests specifically must be a central question for youth-serving organizations in Baltimore. By collectively taking action against white supremacy in the youth development sector, white womxn can be part of a wave of transformational change in Baltimore.

Womxn of Color Happy Hour: Revealing the Ways White Womxn Perpetuate Racism in Baltimore's Workforce

Wednesday, September 11, 2019

Following the 2017 election, we learned of the now infamous 53% of white womxn who voted for the current President. Rarely do conversations about race and gender focus on the powerful and harmful roles white womxn play in upholding white supremacy in places of employment, business, schools, etc. We want to have that conversation in order to continue disrupting systems that marginalize womxn of color. Please join us for a brave, intimate space to fellowship with womxn of color and openly discuss the intersections of race, gender, and identity in the workplace.

Monday, August 5, 2019

Presented by White Womxn Anti-Racism Alliance (WWARA)

This workshop series explored the ways white womxn* in social service sectors reinforce and reproduce racism and white supremacy. Over the course of three sessions we will sought to understand how we as individuals are connected to the historical construction of white womanhood, the legacy of colonial charity work, and ‘helping’ communities of color; the non-profit industrial complex and the maintenance of oppressive systems; and white culture, shame, perfectionism, paternalism, and socialized caretaking. This workshop series was for white womxn who work as social workers, teachers, nonprofit staff, organizers, healthcare workers, and other social service professions and want to challenge their own racism, including how their work reinforces oppressive structures.

Facilitated by: Zara Cadoux

*We use womxn to recognize the gender non-conforming & non-binary people working in these sectors who are seen and/or fill the roles of ‘helping white women’ in communities of color.

For youth leaders looking to work on social impact, where to start can be a challenge. Hearing ‘it’s the system!’ can be overwhelming and paralyzing. Understanding different levels of a system, how systems intersect, and situating your identities within the larger contexts of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, etc., are crucial skills for social justice advocates.  Over the course of two hours, HOBY youth leaders had the opportunity to explore frameworks through a power analysis, build capacity to identity how systems are operating in their own lives, and hear from Zara and Juleon about how they use these analyses in their social impact work.
